Six decades in business have taught me that lasting partnerships depend on honest accounting. At 91, I know that when ventures fail, moving forward requires acknowledging what went wrong.
Illuminated by that principle – which applies to nations as much as to enterprise – I have found myself reflecting on Britain's diminished role in the world.
Having turned its back on Europe, and become increasingly sidelined by Washington, the UK now watches others broker deals in the Middle East. The fragile ceasefire in Gaza is free of British fingerprints. Yet it is the British colonial legacy which continues to inspire division.
